Getting Started

Introduction

The Trader's Access software provides you with three programs in one:

Quote Downloading: You can download historical and daily quotes for any of the 120,000 symbols available in the Trader's Access Database. Symbol types include: stocks (US and Canadian), indices, futures, mutual funds, market statistics, stock options, index options, and futures options. They are all available to you regardless of the downloading plan you choose. The current day's quotes are available at the following Pacific times:

Stocks (US) 4:15 PM

Stocks (Canada) 4:15 PM

Indices 3:15 PM

Futures 3:15 PM

Mutual Funds 4:15 PM

Market Statistics 4:15 PM

Stock Options 4:15 PM

Index Options 4:15 PM

Futures Options 3:15 PM

Data Manipulation: With Trader's Access you can build and maintain multiple symbol lists using as much (back to 1990) or as little historical information as you desire. Once the data is downloaded onto your computer, you can export it into ASCII or MetaStock file formats. This in turn gives other programs such as MetaStock, SuperCharts, Omni Trader, Lotus 123, and Excel the ability to use the Trader's Access data. Trader's Access even includes the ability to edit the MetaStock files directly from within Trader's Access.

Data and Charting Windows: You can use Trader's Access as your primary investment tool because it has Data Windows and Chart Windows. Just double click on a symbol and a Chart will appear on your screen. You can then apply studies like Stochastics, RSI, Right Time, and Bollinger Bands to help you make timely investment decisions. The Data window gives you the ability to view the raw data in order to preform splits, disbursements, or even perpetuate futures contracts.

Starting the Program

• Double click on the Trader's Access icon and the program will load into memory or go to the start button\programs\trader's access\trader's access.

Getting Started

Communications Settings

The first time you run the program, the Communications Settings window will be automatically displayed. You will see a series of tabs marked with each setting.

Retrieval Tab

Password - Type in the password assigned to you by T.B.S.P. Inc. It can be found in the upper right hand corner of your invoice. The password must have 5 numbers and 3 letters (upper case) with no spaces between them.

800 Service/Internet Service - Click on the service that you signed up for.

Answer Time Out/Server Time Out - Type in the amount of time that you want your modem to wait for a connection to the Trader's Access database (sets the S7 register in your modem). This is especially important if you are using pulse dialing. If you are using the internet service, this selection will determine how long the program will wait for the TBSP's server to respond to queries.

Maximum Retries - Type in the number of times you would like the program to try to connect to the Trader's Access database (it may be necessary to retry due to noisy lines or other outside influences).

Always Refresh Previous # of Days: - This allows you to retrieve data for not only the current day's data, but any previous day's data as determined by the number entered. For example, entering 2 would retrieve the current day's data and the 2 latest previous day's data for all of your symbols.

Getting Started

Auto stock splits - # days back in Splits.Txt - Check this if you would like the program to perform a split for daily stocks immediately after downlaoding. Enter the number of days back to check in the splits.txt file (this file is downloaded from our server each time you retrieve quotes).

Show account summary after each call - Click here if you would like the program to show the number of quotes retrieved after each download.

Skip updateing of 52 week high/low: - The program updates the 52 week high and low and the completion of the retrieval. This will skip this process and speed up the retrieval.

Skip downlaoding of fundamental data: This tells the program to not download fundamental data (only applies to Internet Service (A).

800 Service Tab

If you are using the 800 service:

800 Phone Number - The Trader's Access 800 Retrieval phone number should appear automatically. If you need a delay in the phone number, type in a comma "," or click on the Pause icon. This will delay the dialing for 2 seconds (used primarily for offices needing an outside line). For example, some offices need a 9 and then a pause to get an outside line. In this example, you would enter: 9,18002733909 (you may need more than one).

DialUp Settings: Phonebook Entry to Dial - This is the entry you use in your Window's phonebook's Dial UP Settings for connecting to your ISP. For example, you could have called it MSN or Earthlink or MYISPAccess, etc. (this is found in My Computer\Dial Up Networking)

Getting Started

The default for dialing is Touch Tone. For pulse dialing, click on the Pulse icon.

Setup String - The setup string, which is sent to your modem each time it dials our 800 server, is automatically entered when you click on Default. If you have difficulties connecting to the 800 Trader's Access Database, call T.B.S.P.'s Technical Support Department for assistance. Usually &F works for all modems except 3Com/USRobotics which uses &F1.

Communications Port - Click on the com port that your modem is attached to, 1-9.

Baud Rate - Click on the highest baud rate allowed by your modem for Data transmission. If you have a fax modem, do not be confused by the baud rate of the fax part of your modem. Faxing and data transmissions are completely independent of each other.

Verify/Test Settings - After making all of your above selections, click on Test Settings to verify that all is OK. The program will give you a pass or fail grade on your settings.

Internet Service Tab

If you are using the Internet Service:

Connection Type - Select the specific connection type that you will be using

If you are going to let Trader's Access dial your ISP:

Getting Started

ISP User Name - This is the user name you use to access your ISP.

ISP User Password - This is the password you use when you access your ISP. Check to see if i'm already on the internet first - If this is checked, the program will try to verify that you are already on the internet before trying to dial out. If you are on the interent, the program will not try to dial out. Otherwise, the program will dial out to the internet for you.

Time Zone Tab

The white buttons under the map represent the different time zones. Click on the white button that represents your time zone. Once selected, the current Pacific Time Zone item will appear, This is important because the program can only retrieve the current day's quotes after 3:00 PM Pacific Time.

Now that you have finished entering the Communications Settings, press [Enter] or click on [Accept].

Getting Started

Create A List

From the File Menu, select Create List (it is the first selection).

New List Name: Enter a distinct name for the list. For example, if you are going to follow stocks, you could name the list: Stocks. List names can be a maximum of 8 characters.

Currently Available Lists: These are the lists already created. Do not duplicate a list's name. If you do, it will be overwritten, destroying all symbols and data.

Notice that Sample is already included in the Currently Available Lists. This list is built into the program for demonstration purposes.

Press [Enter] or click on [Create].

Upon clicking on [Create] the List will automatically open and you will see the following:

Click on [Yes] to add symbols or [No] to add symbols later or import symbols from an ASCII or MetaStock source.

If you would rather import symbols from an ASCII or MetaStock/Computrac file(s), skip this section by clicking on [No].

Getting Started

Add Symbol

If you have selected [Yes} after creating a list:

Once the Add Symbol window appears you will see a series of tabs marked with each setting. To move from tab to tab just click on the tab.

Symbol Tab

Symbol Type: Click on the type of symbol you are about to add to the list.

The type must match the symbol exactly. For example, if you add a futures symbol but have designated it as a stock, you will not get quotes for the symbol.

Period: Click on the period for the symbol.

Daily: Retrieves only Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday data.

Weekly: Retrieve only Friday's accumulated data consisting of the Open on Monday, High for the week, Low for the week, Close on Friday, total Volume for the week, and Friday's Open Interest (if applicable).

Monthly: Retrieve only the last day of the months accumulated data consisting of the Open on the first day of the month, High for the month, Low for the month, Close for the last day of the month, total Volume for the month, and the last day of the month's Open Interest.

Download Symbol: This is the symbol Trader's Access uses to retrieve data from the database. Make sure it conforms to Trader's Access' symbols (use the Help:Symbol menu selection if you are not sure of the symbol).

Getting Started

Export Symbol - This is the symbol the program will use to output data to ASCII and/or MetaStock/Computrac files. This symbol and the symbol in the export program must be identical. For example, if you are downloading IBM from within Trader's Access, but you are using a different symbol in MetaStock, enter the symbol you are using in MetaStock.

Name - This is a descriptive name of the symbol. For example IBM is really International Business Machines.

Sub List - This entry box allows you to sub catagorize symbols on the list. For example, your List's name could be Stocks, but you could sub classify the symbols on the List by exchange, or by a number. Another example would be: If your list is named Futures you could sub catagorize the symbols by the type of future (i.e. Metals, Currencies, etc). Basically, you can use anything you want (text or numbers) to sub classify your symbols.

If you manually add symbols, but do not enter an Export Symbol or a Name, the Download Symbol will be automatically entered in these two boxes.

Build Button: This makes it very easy to add one or multiple symbols to a list.

For example, to build a stock you will see:

Alphabet: Clicking on one of the alphabetic characters moves you to the first stock in the Available Stocks box that begins with the letter you selected.

Search: As you type, the Available Stocks window will scroll to the first stock containing the characters you type.

Getting Started

Selected: This is the number of symbols built during this session of the building symbols.

Available Stocks: These are the stock names that you can add to the list from within the build window.

Press [Enter] or click on [OK].

Example: To build Microsoft into the program, do the following:

1) Click on the [M] button. The Available Stocks box will show the first name that begins with an M.

2) Scroll down until you can see Microsoft.

3) Click on the [OK] button.

Continue this process for each stock you want to build.

If you build one symbol: The download symbol, export symbol, and name will be filled in automatically.

If you build multiple symbols: The download symbol, export symbol, and name will be filled in with the word "Multiple".

To build multiple symbols - hold down the Shift key and drag your mouse over the symbols to be built, or hold down the Ctrl key and click on the symbols one at a time.

Getting Started

Start Date Tab

Starting Date - This is the first date on which you want the program to start collecting data for the symbol. The program sets a default of 10 days from the current date, but you may change it to any date. If you want to change the starting date after you have entered the symbol, you can use the Edit:Change menu selection at any time (refer to the built-in Help). There are two ways to select a date:

1) Type it in.

2) Click on the day in the calendar after selecting the month and year via the arrows (<< move backward one year. < move backward one month. > move foreword one month. >> move foreword one year).

Getting Started

Adjustments Tab

Price Adjustment - This is the factor you can use to modify price data coming from the Trader's Access database. For example, futures prices are reported by different agencies in different decimal places (i.e. Heating Oil is reported to the Trader's Access database as .7432). You can have the program store the price as 74.32 by clicking on X100. This makes sure that all prices for the symbol are multiplied by 100. To change the Price Adjustment, click on the appropriate adjustment.

Volume Adjustment - You can use this selection to modify volume data coming from the Trader's Access database in the same manner as the price adjustment.

Open Int. Adjustment (not shown) - This is the factor you can use to modify Open Interest. In order to maintain compatibility with older versions of Trader's Access, the Open Interest Adjustment works differently than the Price and Volume Adjustments. In this case, enter a positive number for multiply by or a negative number for divide by. For example, grains are reported by contract. Some publications report them by bushels. To convert the Open Interest to bushels, you need to multiply the number received from the Trader's Access database by 5. In this case, enter a 5.

If you do not want to change the way open interest is reported, leave this item blank.

Getting Started

Alerts Tab

Closing Price Alert - You can be notified if the closing price of the symbol is greater than or less than a certain closing price.

Less Than - Type in a price representing less than.

Greater Than - Type in a price representing more than.

If you enter a price alert, make sure you click on "ON".

You do not have to enter both ("Less Than" and "Greater Than").

Volume Alert - You can be notified if the volume of the symbol is greater than or less than a certain volume.

Less Than - Type in a volume representing less than.

Greater Than - Type in a volume representing more than.

If you enter a volume alert, make sure you click on "ON".

You do not have to enter both ("Less Than" and "Greater Than").

Alerts appear when you run an Alerts Scan. This can be automated at the end of each download by selecting Alerts Scan in Settings:Automation (refer to the built-in Help).

Getting Started

Export Tab

Available File Types - In order to export data to an ASCII or MetaStock/Computrac files, you must put a check mark in front of the Available File Type.

You can designate more than one type.

Setting up export here allows you to automatically export data for the symbol on a daily basis if you automate exporting in Settings:Automation. If it is turned on, each time data is downloaded, the export will automatically take place.

ASCII - To export the data for the symbol to an ASCII file, click here. Data will be exported to the ASCII file in the format you designate in Settings: Export (the extension is determined by the type of delimiter as set in Settings: Export - see the built-in Help for more information on this topic).

MetaStock/Computrac - To export the data for the symbol to a MetaStock file, click here. At this point the Files Directory window will appear.

Getting Started

MetaStock/Computrac Files

Available Files: This side of the window will display the Master files that the MetaStock file uses to store data. If there is a MetaStock file in the current folder, you will see the word MASTER in the big box. If a Master MetaStock file is not present, you will see (as shown above) an empty box.

Notice at the top of the Available Files side of the window, you will see the current path being shown.

Notice at the bottom of the Available Files side of the window you will see (in yellow) the type of files that the bigger box will display.

Available Folders: This side of the window displays the folders available in the current path. At the top you will see the drive letter and the current folder will be highlighted. To change folder's double click on the one above it or the one below it - or scroll to the appropriate one.

Available Drives: This is the drive that you are currently in, but can be changed by clicking on the down arrow and then clicking on the appropriate drive.

Find Files: Clicking here will force the program to search your hard drive (the one shown in Available Drives) for MetaStock Master files.

Create/Overwrite MetaStock Files in the Above Folder: 1) If there is no Master file in the currently selected folder, one will be created. If there is a Master file in the currently selected folder, it will be deleted and a new one will be created.

Create Folder in the Above Folder: This is a convenience for you that allows you to just create a folder within the currently shown folder - this is easier than quitting Trader's Access and creating a folder using the Explorer.

Getting Started

There are three ways to set up symbols for exporting to MetaStock/Computrac files:

1) Select the Master file to export the symbol to by clicking on it. When you click on [OK] or press the [Enter] key the program will set up the symbol (export symbol) for output to the MetaStock/Computrac Master file in the selected directory.

2) Choose an empty folder (one that does not have a Master file). When you press [Enter] or click on [OK] the program will create a Master file in the directory you selected. The symbol will then be setup for exporting to this new Master file in this directory.

3) Click on Find Files and all Master MetaStock files will be found on your hard drive. Click on the Master file you wish to insert the newly added stock into.

You are now finished with Adding a symbol. You may repeat this process as many times as you wish and then click on the [Add] button. The Add Symbol window will disappear and you will be at the List Window.

Getting Started

Import Symbols (Only available when a List is the most forward window)

From the File menu, select Import. You will see a side menu showing you the selections: ASCII or MetaStock/Computrac.

The File Directory will be displayed. Change the drive and/or the folder to the appropriate one and click on the specific file that you would like to import symbols from.

ASCII

Assumptions:

• All symbols are stocks when imported (use the Edit:Change menu selection to modify the Type).

• All symbols have a starting data retrieval date of 10 days prior to the current date.

• The download symbol, export symbol, and the name are the same as the ASCII Symbol.

• All non duplicate symbols will be imported into the program.

The file layout for ASCII import must be in one of the following formats:

Symbol Only IBM

Symbol,Name IBM,Inter Bus Mach

Symbol,Name,Other IBM, Inter Bus Mach,XXX,XXX,XXX

You do not need quotes around the symbols, but you must use a comma or a tab as a delimiter if you have more than one field in the ASCII file. The file must have the ".TXT" or "CSV" extension and the symbol must be the first field.

You will be asked to select the ASCII file for importing:

Select the appropriate TXT/CSV file, after changing drives or directories (whichever is appropriate), and press [Enter] or click on [OK] to import the symbols.

Once the symbols are imported, you may make changes to the symbol's type and/or Start Date.

Getting Started

MetaStock/Computrac

Assumptions:

• All symbols are stocks when imported (use the Edit:Change menu selection to modify the Type) because MetaStock files do not designate type.

• All symbols have a starting data retrieval date of 10 days prior to the current date.

• The download symbol, export symbol, and the name are the same as the MetaStock/Computrac symbol.

• All non duplicate symbols will be brought into the program from the Master file you select.

Select the appropriate MASTER file, after changing drives or directories (whichever is appropriate), and press [Enter] or click on [OK] to import the symbols.

As an added bonus, the program will ask you if you want to import the data from the MetaStock/Computrac file. Select [Yes] to bring in the data.
